Hopscotch........................one.....................

A picture of my first completed sock from the Socktopus club. I love this yarn, it is so soft and easy to knit with. The pattern is lovely too and easy to remember. I liked the short-row heel but have a high heel so need more space there. Shame that! They are mush quicker to knit than flaps/gussets, but also not as sturdy I think?

Which do you prefer? Flaps or short-rows?

That's lovely!

And short-row wins every time for me.

If I need more space in the heel, instead of working it on the usual 30 sts I slip 2 sts each end from the instep side onto the heelside and then work the heel short rows starting with 34 sts. This gives 4 more rows of short row decreases and 4 extra rows of short row increases iyswim. Then you just slip the 2 sts each side back....

And for sturdy...well all my socks are short-row heels and none have worn out yet!

I prefer flaps and gussets. They fit my foot better than a short row.

Pretty sock.

Lovely yarn in a very cool pattern -- slipped stitch cables?

I do either a flap or short row, depending on the sock. I do my short row heels over 2/3 of the stitches instead of half, as that fits my foot better. So if I need half the instep stitches for a pattern stitch, it's a flap. If I want the least possible disruption to how the yarn itself is patterning, it's a short row, because all the wonky ends up just on the heel and the instep carries on as before. I'm liking less and less the colour disruptions that happen with a gusset. So yeah, it depends. :-)

I do a provisional or afterthought heel. Very easy ti rip out to knit those worn-out heels

I enjoy reading comments fellow blogger leave as it is such a learning opportunity, I like the solution Kathryn left. Dave is a wonderful sock knitter and has alot of knowledge which he is very generous with. This sock is beautiful as usual, The patterns you choose just seem to be such exceptional choices for each yarn you use.

They are gorgeous. I think I prefer flaps as I have a high instep and they seem to fit better.

Lovely yarn and another lovely pattern. Just had a look at their site - they have some v. tempting yarn!

PS This sounds rude, and sorry to bring down the tone, but I prefer flaps!

My preferred method is also flaps, preferably Eye of Partridge. I agree with you, short rows don't seem as sturdy to me and seem like they would wear out much faster.

By the way, love that pattern!
